Quiet moves in Chess960
A quiet move is a winning move that gives neither check nor capture. Nothing changes hands and no threat is shouted; the move simply improves a piece, takes a square, or removes the defender’s last resource, and the position collapses a move later. These are the moves the engine finds and the human eye slides past.
Because Chess960 offers no familiar plans, the decisive quiet move often has nothing to do with theory — it is a purely positional shot that only calculation can confirm. Recognising that a soft, unforcing move is in fact the win is one of the real tests of vision the variant creates.
Positions here are won by a single non-check, non-capture move, ordered by how hard that move is to see — the more invisible the idea, the higher it ranks.
